“Despite all our accomplishments, we owe our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil & the fact that it rains.”

-Paul Harvey (paraphrased)

Born and raised in North Carolina and nestled deep in the NC Appalachian Mountains for the last 17 years, and where currently my amazing wife and I are in the process of building out our farmstead. I attended Appalachian State University (B.A., Religious Studies & M.S. Appropriate Technology) and since 2014 I have taught in the Sustainable Technology program there.

I’ve been composting for over 10 years. Whatever the technique, I simply find the process of shepherding the conversion of dead organic matter back to fertile, living soil extraordinarily fascinating. Being able to work in that liminal state between life-death-life and being a part of that cycle is so fulfilling. Yeah, it sounds sappy, but it’s the truth. Much of my academic research focuses on community-scale composting systems, and through Wildcat Compost, I look forward to working to help build a thriving, decentralized, composting infrastructure for my (and maybe your!) community.
